As you may or may not recall, the issue of FEMA trailers and their contamination with formaldehyde had managed to make national headlines nearly one year ago. Now FEMA trailers are back in the news, but for good reason. No longer being sold as places of residence, these trailers have now been deemed as "scrap" and are being sold as such.

In March of 2007 FEMA had the difficult task of supplying nearly 150,000 trailers, mobile homes, and campers to the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster and had spent nearly $2.5 billion on the whole ordeal. As it turns out, many of these homes never did serve their initial purpose and were instead declared surplus and ultimately sold to anyone who was willing to buy one. People soon realized that instead of shelling out $25,000 to $40,000 for a brand new trailer, they could purchase them directly from the government for nearly a fraction of the cost. They began to sell like hotcakes.

Unfortunately news reports started flooding in soon after of formaldehyde that had been discovered during the construction of these trailers. In December 2007 Congressional leaders "out of an abundance of caution" expressed considerable anger and the federal government had decided that it would be best to suddenly stop selling these FEMA trailers that had been so sought after. While further cases of contamination had steadily declined, the demand for these trailer homes had not and - if anything - was soon on the rise.

So for nearly a year - nothing. The government had continued to stick to their guns and refrain from the sale of FEMA trailers no matter how high the demand. Now after a lengthy respite, FEMA trailers are back and ready to be sold; however as previously mentioned, they are being designated as "scrap". This essentially means that prices will be significantly lower and the government is seeking to rid themselves of these trailers as quickly as possible but without "killing the market".

The government claims these trailers are unfit for occupancy but this doesn't mean they are unsuitable for uses such as office space, command posts, or storage. However you decide to use them is your prerogative but the bottom line is there is still an abundance of these trailers waiting to be sold. Fema Has Campers For Sale Super Cheap - But Should You Buy One?

It will come as welcome news to many people. The trailers that FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) stockpiled in 2005 are again coming on the market for sale. Consumers have been buying them for a song.

But should you hop on the buying bandwagon? Here's a list of pros and cons.

The advantages:

Price: As I said, they're going for a lark. The Washington Post reported an average sale price of $7,367 on these trailers and mobile homes reputedly worth $18,620 each. In other words, buyers are paying about 40 cents on the dollar.

Condition. Many trailers were hardly used. Some are like new.

Availability. As of their most recent post, FEMA claims an excess inventory of 120,000 units. They say they will be selling trailers and mobile homes for the next 3 years to clear inventory.

The disadvantages:

Price. The majority of the 10,839 travel trailers FEMA sold between July 24, 2006 and July 23, 2007 were sold as scrap. So tht's $6, 936 for campers for sale and $11,479 for mobile homes that you cannot live in.

Condition. Many trailers are not in great shape. Those sold in the past have been uninhabitable. Which, in FEMA parlance, meant they could be used only as office space or storage containers. It was FEMA's way of handling the high levels of formaldehyde fumes given off by the building materials that you'll recall stung the eyes of Katrina victims and gave them unremitting upper respiratory problems.

The units coming on sale now are not classified as scrap. They're "repairable". Generally, that means they need up to $1,500 of work done to repair damage they suffered from sitting empty in damp places and being moved several times.

Availability. They are currently parked at an airport in Hope Kansas. And you have to pay to make them road worthy, and then to move them.

Our original question.

Should you buy one? Of course, the answer depends on where you are, how much you have to invest, and what you want to use it for.

FEMA campers are being scooped up monthly. The irony is that due to the economy, there are thousands of campers for sale at auction each month from government surplus and seized and repossessed inventory with starting bids as low as $100. People just don't know how to find them. There is no reason to ignore the FEMA campers. Just keep your eyes open for better deals on better RVs. They are out there and abundant.

When it comes to inspecting a trailer, do not let your emotions get in the way of your needs. Have a checklist of the things that are important to you when looking at a potential travel trailer buy. Just because a trailer looks sparkly clean and smells great from the inside, doesn't mean it will be your best choice. The following are top ten plus one things you should look for when inspecting a travel trailer (not necessarily in this order):

1. Towing vehicle - make sure your towing vehicle is able to support the weight of the trailer. Confirm that you are within the capacities of the trailer being towed. This can not be stressed enough. There are many trailers on the road that should not be towed by the vehicles that are towing them. This is very dangerous to you and vehicles around you and also the lifespan of your tow vehicle will be shortened.

2. Roof - the roof should be designed to keep water from leaking to the interior. Look for signs of water pooling. If you see lots of sealant applied be sure to check around the ceiling inside for signs of water damage.

3. Bathroom - inspect the shower frame by grabbing a hold of it and seeing if it's possible to rattle the frame? Some showers look great but don't hold up to the rigors of bouncing when trailer is on the road. If there is a shower tub make sure it has water tight enclosures. For your health and comfort you need a small power fan for venting the roof.

Comparing Hitches For Travel Trailers

Have you ever considered buying a trailer but, didn't have a clue as to what hitch would work best. There are so many hitches available on the open market ranging from a couple of hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. For the sake of keeping it simple, I will go over 2 different types of hitches.

Lets compare a Husky weight distribution Hitch with a single sway control bar to an Equalizer weight distribution Hitch. First of all the definition of a weight distribution hitch is:

Weight distribution hitches evenly distribute weight over the entire length of tow vehicle and trailer, resulting in a more level ride with more control and stability, better braking, less strain on vehicle and increased towing capacity.

The Husky hitch has load leveling bars that use chains to level the load of the tongue weight resulting in a leveler ride. Without load leveling bars your ride can be very uncomfortable, you will feel the tow vehicle bouncing some (depending on your vehicle), as if some one was jumping on your bumper. The Husky hitch is a very good hitch that has been around for a long time. With this hitch you will have to use the Husky manual sway bar/bars. Sway bars help reduce trailer sway when driving. They do not eliminate trailer sway only reduce it. Keep in mind that if road conditions are causing big tractor haulers to pull over then you should as well.

The Equalizer hitch also, has load leveling bars. However, they do not use chains to level the load. The weight distribution bars and saddles (the part that connects to the trailer to hook the load leveling bars on) are hard steel and do not allow much, if any movement what so ever. The nice thing about the Equalizer hitch is that, it has built in sway control on both load leveling bars. This means that you, wouldn't have to pull over to adjust any sway bars as you would have to do so on the Husky hitch (because it's manual).

Now, keep one thing in mind there is a difference in price but not much. The Husky is typically a few hundred dollars cheaper. However, after the first trip in your trailer you would most likely be wishing you had gotten the built in sway from the Equalizer hitch. Always, do your research to see which hitch fits your needs and budget. Both of these manufacturers come out with new and improved products every year, so it pays to do your research. Final note, always make sure your tow vehicle is properly rated to tow the travel trailer you are looking to purchase.

Can You Get Up to 50 Percent Off the Purchase Price of a New RV? Yes, You Can

Here is a question I recently received. I am in the market for a new Class A motor home. Prices on 2008 models are slashed up to 40%. We haven't made an offer yet but some advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have any idea how low dealers are willing to go? Would 50% off be an unreasonable request (maybe even more if I see that they have 5 of the same model RV on their lot)?

ANSWER: YES!! Due to current economic conditions, you can expect some unbelievable deals on any new RV you are looking at. To say that now is a "buyers market" for RVs would be an understatement. This is a unique opportunity for new RV buyer's to get more RV for each dollar spent than ever before. But, like the bad economy, this opportunity will not be around forever.

Due to the terrible economy and volatile fuel prices the RV Industry is in a major crisis. In the last 2 years more RV Manufacturers and RV Dealers have permanently closed their doors than ever before in the history of the RV Industry. Depending on who you listen to; 2008 RV sales were down by 30% to 40% compared to 2007. 2007 was also a bad year for RV sales, so the situation has gone from bad to worse.

Is expecting 50% off a new RV unreasonable? No, it is not, in fact some RV Dealerships still have some brand new 2006 RVs sitting on their lots. All RV dealers are highly motivated to move out these RVs and will make some extraordinary deals, shy of giving the RV away for free.

My personal recommendation is; if you want to get the best deal you can, go to an RV Show. This time of year there are lots of RV Shows going on. In fact, even if an RV Show is not close to you, it will be worth the trip to go to one. At RV Shows, dealers compete with other dealers to sell you an RV.

All RV Dealers are desperate to sell RVs right now, so when you have one desperate RV Dealer competing with another desperate RV Dealer to sell you an RV, you are bound to get a better deal than you would by only going to one dealership.

Here are some steps you need to take prior to going to the show.

1. Narrow down the type of RV you are looking for. Are you looking for a Motorhome (class A, B or C), 5th Wheel Trailer, Travel Trailer, Tent Trailer or Truck Camper? Regardless of which one you choose, you are going to end up with a great deal.

2. You should narrow your search down to the Brand you are looking for. Doing research via the internet is a good way to help pinpoint your choices.

3. Determine how much you can comfortably afford to buy. This is a very important step. When figuring out what you can comfortably afford, consider other expenses that come with an RV that are not part of the purchase price. Remember you are going to be spending money on fuel (for the motorhome or tow vehicle), camping expenses (that's why you are buying a RV right?), routine maintenance, insurance, license /registration, emergency road service, RV storage, etc. The keyword here is, do not stretch yourself thin.

4. In most cases, you are going to have to secure a loan to buy an RV. If possible, get pre-approved for an RV Loan (this is a great advantage when negotiating for an RV, more on that later). Because of the current economic circumstances, your credit score is going to be a big factor on whether you get a loan or not.

WARNING: A finance company will give you a loan for as much as you want (based on your credit). But, just because they are going to give you that much credit does not mean that you have to use that much credit. Remember what we talked about in step 3.

You are now ready to go to the RV Show or RV Dealership and start looking for your new RV. Here are some things to consider when looking for a new RV.

1. Because of the current economic conditions, now more than ever you are in the "Driver's Seat" when it comes to buying an RV and all of the RV Salespeople know it. They really want you to buy an RV and are more willing to make excellent deals. Take advantage of this situation, by bargaining hard and do not take NO for an answer.

2. REMINDER: You are still going to have to negotiate to get the best deal for you. The salesperson will not give you the rock bottom price the first time you ask. Even in a rough economy, you are going to have to negotiate. Here are some key points to remember when negotiating.

*If you have secured a loan in advance, use it to your advantage; let the salesperson know up front that you already have a loan. This way they know that you are serious about purchasing an RV. They will also know that they won't have to wait around while you go through the loan approval process, with the possibility of not being approved for the loan.

*If you are at an RV Show, determine if more than one dealer has the model RV you are looking for and use it to your advantage. Start negotiating with Dealer A. If Dealer A gives you an offer that they say is the best they can do, get the price in writing and tell them "you have to think about it". Now wander over to dealer B and show them the price that Dealer A just offered you and ask them if they can beat it, if they say they can than get it in writing and go back to dealer A. Repeat this process until you get the price you are looking for. The beauty of this method is that you are no longer negotiating; you have started a bidding war between two dealers. The winner of this war is going to be you.

* You may also hear this statement from your salesperson. "The price we are giving you is good for today only". That means, I really want to make a sale today. If they really want to sell you an RV (and they do), you will still be able to get the same price on the same unit within a reasonable amount of time after that day. Be prepared to walk away and not make a deal that day. If you feel that you are not getting the sale price you should, be prepared to pack it in and leave. Sometimes when the sales person actually sees you walking away they have an epiphany and can actually get a little better price. If not, continue walking and actually leave. This next part is optional; you can give them your phone number and ask them not to call you unless they can come closer to your price.

3. During your RV hunting you will come across some brand new RVs that are known as "Orphan RVs". These are brand new RVs that were manufactured by RV makers that have since gone out of business. There are no new RV warranties on orphaned RVs. If you buy it you will be solely responsible for the cost of any repairs on that RV. Remember, the RV Dealer is selling you the RV; they did not build the RV. That being said, there have been some RV Dealers that have stepped up and performed warranty work on "Orphaned" RVs and not charged the customer for the repairs. In other words they eat the cost themselves.

Some dealers will tell you that they will provide you with a warranty for the RV, if you buy it. This is where you have to be careful. If the dealer is talking about an "Extended Warranty" then you have to be aware that an "Extended Warranty" does not cover all of the items that a "New RV Warranty" does. Other dealers will actually commit to cover all of the repairs that the manufacturers New RV Warranty would have covered, had they still been in business. If you are going to buy one of these RVs make sure you get in writing exactly how warranty repairs are going to be covered. Do this before you sign on the dotted line.

The time for extraordinary deals on new RVs is here. How long will it last no one knows. One thing is for sure regardless if you are buying a new RV or upgrading to a newer RV, you will never regret your decision to become an RVer. Year-Round Georgia RV Adventure Travel Ideas

Whether the sun is shining, leaves are falling, or icicles are glistening, there's an exciting RV trip to be had. Jaunts to the beach are fairly standard, but new RV and travel trailer enthusiasts often miss out on some unique adventures that are only possible during other times of the year.

Georgia RV dealers are a good place to start when you're on the hunt for new destinations with your RV or travel trailer. They're likely RV owners themselves, and reap the benefits of information other customers have shared. One of the first short-distance trips many local RV dealers suggest is Red Top Mountain at Lake Allatoona.

Part of Georgia's state park system, Red Top Mountain is a perfect destination almost year-round. Visitors can enjoy swimming, boating and fishing in the 12,000 acre lake, or can take to the trails for hiking or biking. In the colder months, the park offers themed activities on some weekends, like Harvest at the Homestead, or Christmas at the Cabin. Interesting near-by attractions include the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, as well as the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site.

If you're feeling lucky, head to Dahlonega during the third weekend in October for the world famous Gold Rush Days. Thousands hit the small town to see the deep fall colors at their peak and celebrate Dahlonega's discovery of gold in 1828. If the gold panning contest doesn't call to you, there are plenty of other things to do: stroll the 300 booths set up by artists and craftsmen, check out the parade, listen to some old fashioned hog-calling, or even watch a fashion show. Another Fall destination, Cloudland Canyon State Park, is said by some Georgia RV dealers to be one of the most beautiful spots in the state. The views into the Canyon are stunning, and if you're able to weather a 600-step staircase and some serious hiking, the waterfalls at the bottom are worth it. Tennis and disc golf are also available at the park, which has 73 sites for RVs or travel trailers.

Once the chilly winter months hit, a prime RV and travel trailer destination is Hilton Head Island. While most tourists associate the island with surf and sand, the winter Carnival season is also a blast. Throughout January and February, Hilton Head celebrates with live entertainment, pageants, bike tours, opera and other cultural events. If you arrive in February, you'll also be able to take part in the Gullah Celebration and learn more about the unique lifestyle and language of those descended from West African slaves in the region.

If you're thinking about a trip over Labor Day weekend, talk with your RV dealer about some of the options--there are many. One that's received rave reviews from GA RV dealers in the past is the Hot Air Balloon Festival at Callaway Gardens. The weekend starts with a balloon glow on Friday night, and the fun doesn't stop until the end of the weekend. Between balloon launches, there's entertainment, demonstrations, and activities for kids and grown-ups (rock climbing, anyone?).

Grab the kids, pack up that RV, and hit the road. With all the year-round adventure RV opportunities in and around Georgia, there's no reason to wait until next summer!

I've witnessed with my own eyes that people can come up with some crazy ways to haul things. Remember the Beverly Hillbillies, how they just tied and strapped everything to the old Ford? Now I've seen the modern version of this countless times, and it can be a scary experience following this vehicle down the road. But what about unique trailers, have you ever seen one that caught your eye when you were driving down the road? There wasn't anything unsafe about it; it was just a unique trailer.

Motorcycle Gas Tank Trailer

One you might have seen was the prototype of the new and unusual motorcycle pod trailer (where the motorcycle rides inside for transport). This trailer was just entering the production phase when unforeseen circumstances put things on hold for a bit. Shaped like the gas tank of a motorcycle, this trailer will have people doing a double take on the highway if it ever gets out to the public. What is so unique about this trailer is that it can be custom painted to exactly match the paint on your bike.

Homemade Travel Trailer for Under $100

Another unique trailer dots the country and can be yours for $100 or less. This trailer is a make shift camping trailer. What the owner has generally done is take the bed of pickup truck minus the cab and welded onto it the top half of a camper. After applying a trailer hitch, he has created a trailer that is generally the talk of the campground. Don't worry if you this exact trailer. Keep your eyes open, and eventually, you will. These homemade camping trailers are not that unusual in farming communities, although their safety is questionable. I'm not an expert, but doesn't it just make a lot more sense to keep the camper cap on a pickup truck that actually runs? But that wouldn't be very unique, would it?

And there are many more unique trailers to be found. All you need to do is keep your eye open while out on the road or visit one of the many car shows being held all over your state and beyond. The truth is that there could be as many unique trailers out there as there are drivers. You too can make a unique trailer. All you need is a little imagination and a little knowledge about trailer construction and safety.

Family Camping Trip Finds New Pleasures

Camping is an activity that I spent most of my forty plus years believing I had no interest in and absolutely no use for. And don’t you just love it when circumstances present themselves which shatter long standing beliefs?

After the passing of my dear mother, it was her wish that my family and I did something that would enhance our togetherness in her memory. For weeks, I struggled with how I was going to fulfill her wishes. Nothing seemed just right, and the few ideas I had just didn’t seem “lasting” enough.

Then, one day I stopped into a local grocery store that I seldom use, but it was convenient at the time so I rushed in through the front door, with only my urgent grocery needs in mind. As I was passing their bulletin board with local ads, business cards and such, a flyer jumped out at me with the following words in big, bold lettering:

Family Camping is Just What You Need!

Well, I certainly didn’t think my family “needed” camping, but for some reason that headline compelled me to take a closer look. Below the headline, there was a photo of a motor home for sale and the flyer went on to say that the seller’s wife had just passed away and he no longer could maintain the motor home by himself and was forced to sell. He said the motor home would be perfect for a family looking to enjoy the togetherness that camping afforded, and for which he and his wife had so many fond memories.

Jumping ahead about six weeks…

My husband and I found ourselves backing our new travel trailer into our driveway excitedly for the first time, with no idea of the joy this box on wheels was about to bring to our lives. We didn’t end up purchasing the motor home shown on the flyer, but we did go look at it and got quite a camping education from the seller. And it was that visit which put the notion into our heads that perhaps camping would be a wonderful experience for us and our two daughters and the lasting memories would be a fitting tribute to my own mother as well.

How we found and picked up our new toy is another story in and of itself, and I will blog about it very soon. But for my purposes here, I want to illustrate the merits of staying open to any possibilities that cross your path, because you never know when a new adventure is right around the corner.

Because we got our trailer late in the season, we only managed to squeeze in three camping trips before the winter weather set in. But oh what trips they were! From the very first campground we pulled into, it became abundantly clear that this was the best investment we had ever made.

I had never relaxed on a vacation so much and enjoyed nature and the outdoors to the extent that our new hobby permitted. And our children played, explored and had experiences that will remain with them for life. My husband, well, let’s just say he’s already looking at our next trailer and he will gladly take any proud camper up on the offer to “look inside,” and show him around their “perfect,” model.

So, I will say this to you… If a headline jumps out and you and says: Family Camping is Just What You Need! – Take 2 minutes to stop and consider the message, you may be very glad you did!

A family of four can sleep comfortably in the trailer, especially if the kids are young enough to sleep in the same bed.

The basic unit has two fold outs, that are used as sleeping quarters. The main part has a small dinette, a storage area and a cooking area with a tiny refrigerator. Generally there is an outdoor shower and a grilling area.

Notice a toilet is not mentioned. The low end pop-up trailers don’t have them. Many people use portable toilets for emergencies and use the campground facilities otherwise.

The higher priced campers often have cassette toilets a shower better cooking facilities and some have a slide out extra room to give you extra living space. The extra room is a boon when everyone is stuck inside due to inclement weather. Remember to pack some games and toys for the kids and a good book for yourself.

Your family should have no problem eating and sleeping in the pop-up as long as you don’t have to stay indoors for long periods of time. You are protected from the elements by heavy duty canvas and a metal rook.

One problem new RV-ers have with their pop-ups, is backing into your campsites. Take it slow and have someone guide you in or choose a pull through campsite.

The only other major expense you will have is the cost of the hitch, which is less than 500 dollars. The increased consumption of gasoline is minimal and your insurance and tolls for your camper is much less than it would be for high end RV’s.

Our first camper was a Coleman pop-up that we bought used. We used it for two years and had a blast. It was sold to a friend when we bought a camper van.

If you aren’t sure about whether you would enjoy RV-ing and don’t want to hassle with having to get the RV back to the dealer by a certain time, get yourself a used pop-up and I guarantee you will be hooked on RV-ing.

To get discounts on campground and RV rentals as well as RV parts you should join the Good Sam Club. The club also provides a discount RV insurance and an excellent roadside assistance program. This group also has message boards where you can ask questions and make life-long friendships.

There are dozens of websites where you can find places to rent or buy a pop-up camper-trailer. You can also look in hunting or other outdoor sports magazine want ads for used campers.

Auction sites like E-bay often have pop-ups listed either for direct sale or as an auction item. If you shop wisely you can save big money here on your used trailer.

Coleman is one of the manufacturers of pop-ups a.k.a. fold out trailers. They have been in business since 1978. You can’t go wrong with one of their campers.

The pop-up actually has some advantages over the bigger more luxurious motor homes. The camper is easier to maintain and store. Also once you get to your campsite and set up, the tow vehicle can be used to go sightseeing, shopping or to visit local attractions. You can’t park a big motor home in front of the local mini-mart.

Cost-wise the care, maintenance and use of a pop-up is cheaper than the bigger mobile homes. Enjoy your pop-up camper trailer.

Travel trailers, fifth wheels, RVs - call them what you will but for those of us that love to live in them they are home. And one likes to surround oneself with the amenities of modern living whether the home is mobile or not. Some place the priority of mobile living on escape - going to the country, finding the quiet and relaxing. Others want to embrace the RV lifestyle while remaining connected to current events and their favorite television programs. Still others, especially those with children, find that it is important to bring along with their home TV, music, Internet and video games. The priorities of entertainment vary and are as numerous as the models and options of travel vehicles.

These days technology is certainly on our side. The entertainment system options in RVs have changed dramatically in the last few years. Television screens alone have made an amazing difference to the necessary efficiency of travel trailers and RVs. Where before a small, relatively speaking, 19" screen required a much bigger devotion of space than do the massive screens of today. Doing away with the tube was perhaps one of the biggest advances in RV entertainment technology. In addition to efficiency of space these flat screen TVs add the possibility of multiple televisions. This is especially helpful for a family traveling with kids.

Often new RVs and travel trailers come equipped with entertainment systems. When shopping for a new vehicle it is important to understand what is included with the quote. Often one sees a show model which is outfitted with the fullest package while the quoted price does not include the full entertainment system displayed. While entertainment system upgrades are generally available make sure that the hike in cost is realistic when compared to the actual cost of the additional components. This is an important consideration when one considers that electronics stores often offer great deals on the various components of an entertainment system. However, the additional cost can be worth it for a vehicle that is fully equipped and ready to roll on day one. A professional or factory installed entertainment system can save a lot of space and do away with the eyesore and hassle of the cables and connecting hardware of additional equipment.

If one already owns a travel trailer or RV and is looking to upgrade the entertainment system it is important to consider such things as size, storage and compatibility. Certain questions should be answered. Can this component be hooked up with minimum hassle such as pulling out existing components to get at the plugs in the back? When not in use can it be stored while respecting the efficiency of space? Can it be plugged into and powered by the existing power sources of the RV?

The options for entertainment on the road are vast and today's technology makes them incredibly flexible. Finding the right options for you and your travel companions is important. Take the time to make the right choice.

As with cars, buying a used RV or travel trailer can be a great way to get the best bargain. Like cars, new RVs tend to devalue, although less dramatically, the second they are driven off the lot. Knowing this has led many a bargain hunter on the search for the perfect used travel trailer or RV.

But there's a lot to be wary of with any used vehicle. This especially goes for travel trailers, fifth wheels and RVs. Besides needing to be road worthy recreational vehicles also need to be equipped to provide a comfortable residence. These double duty vehicles should be double checked by buyers, especially those in the second-hand market.

Here are some tips for picking out the right vehicle:

- Overall check: The initial walk-through is extremely important. Try to get a general feel of the living space on the inside and the vehicle on the outside. While taking in the general view also make an effort to notice the details. Follow-up on anything that seems amiss.

- Insurance: Before closing the deal make sure that you can get proper insurance for the vehicle. An independent insurance agent can steer you in the right direction on this decision; don't leave it up to the word of the seller.

- Batteries: Find out where all the batteries are. Motor homes generally have two; travel trailers one but that's not always the case. The vehicle's batteries are important especially in a motor home. A Toy Hauler Trailer is less expensive than the 5th Wheel Trailer, starting around $15K. That's quite a jump from the Jumping Jack Tent Trailer that has a price tag around $5K. Don't let the low price fool you, it's easy spend the better part of a years wages on one, if you choose.

Manufactures have responded to the SUV market by producing "lightweight and ultra-light" Toy Hauler Trailers. Yet loaded with fuel, water, and the toys, my 23 footer has a gross weight is near a whopping 10,000 pounds. My experience is that a rig can "comfortably" tow a little more than one half of its rated towing capacity. Keep this in mind if you will be towing in mountainous country. My Dodge diesel is rated at 16,000 pounds towing capacity. Which gives me a little power to spare in the mountains.

Initially, our plan was to park our new trailer in the same space as our little motorhome, but when it arrived we found that it was much bigger than it looked in the dealer's lot. We barely had enough room. With the help of my wife to guide me, we managed, but quickly realized that we had a trailer with almost no-where to park it. The lesson we learned was to be sure to measure your parking space before you buy. Keep in mind your maneuvering room. The corner of our house is quite a bit closer than I remember. It's certainly a tight fit, so I recruit the wife, and I back the trailer in ever so slowly.

Proper hitch set up is very important with Toy Hauler Trailers. Large trailers are subject to catching wind and can be sensitive to proper load distribution. A good hitch will make towing a pleasure for you. Seak the guidance of your RV dealer in setting up your hitch.

When you move up from a smaller unit into a Travel Trailer, the comfort levels really start to rise. No need to worry about having to get up and move to let someone pass by. Some floor plans have the slide-out area converting into dinettes while others slide the couch out for leg stretching.

What I really like about the Toy Hauler Trailer is the extra goodies, especially created for hauling toys. It has a fuel station that can hold upward to 30 gallons of gas and has its own electric fuel pump and nozzle for filling the toys. A 4000-watt Onan generator powers my tools and keeps the lights burning bright while I'm working on the quads. During the day, the large checkerboard awning keeps the rays off my bald head, and believe me; you've not experienced sunburn 'til you've burned the top of your dome. Man that hurts!

Overall the Toy Hauler Travel Trailer gives you the best bang for the buck and is quickly proving itself in the travel trailer market.

Of course, there are drawbacks to a travel trailer vs. a popup trailer. First, storage needs to be considered. Lots of people do not have room to park a medium to large sized travel trailer at their homes without it consuming a considerable amount of their yard. Also, fuel mileage is greatly decreased, even versus popup trailers. The travel trailers create a lot of wind drag. This is a question RV owners have been asking for generations. The answer depends on your needs and what you want to do. A travel trailer, or tongue pull trailer, is towed by an SUV or a pickup truck attached by a receiver hitch at the rear of your vehicle. The weight of the trailer rests on that hitch so it is important to have the right size hitch and a weight distribution system for the RV you are towing. A 5th wheel is attached by a hitch bolted to the bed of a pickup truck. The weight of this trailer is carried by the truck itself and is designed to be mated to the truck. With a tongue pull maneuverability can be an issue in tight spaces as the turning radius is limited and there is less control under difficult road conditions. 5th Wheels have much better control under all road conditions and the maneuverability is much easier because of a shorter turning radius.

Another factor that comes into play is the comfort factor. Travel trailers, for the most part are made for camping. They are sturdy and durable but most are not designed to be used more than a few days at a time. There are luxury travel trailers available and they are extremely nice but living in one for any length of time is difficult. Most 5th Wheel trailers on the other hand are designed to be lived in with all season insulation and features that are more like a house than a trailer. This brings us to the last comparison, affordability. I will be discussing new trailers only because used trailers can be all over the place as far as pricing is concerned. New travel trailers will range around $16,000 for an 18ft super-lite up to more than $45,000 for a luxury 34ft coach. Smaller trailers can be pulled by a min-van or a small SUV. However, when you get above the 27ft range you really need to three quarter ton SUV or pickup to tow your trailer safely and maintain maximum control under all road conditions. 5th Wheels will start around $25,000 up to $80,000 to even $100,000 for luxury coaches with all the amenities of the fanciest homes including fireplaces and 60in flat screen TVs. You will need at least a three quarter ton truck to pull one safely with the larger ones requiring a 1 ton truck.

When was the last time you went camping? Camping at that time meant learning survival tips as well as hiking, which provided great exercise and fun. Camping equipment simply referred to sleeping bags and the tent. Today, camping equipment can mean something completely different.

Do you have a kid that goes camping with a scout troop or something similar? No longer does camping entail having to pitch the tent, unroll the sleeping bags, and get a campfire going. A camper used to be a title for someone who camped, but it now refers to what modern campers sleep in at campgrounds. The term camping equipment now refers to many technologically advanced amenities. However, owning an RV does sometimes restrict where you can go. If you are interested in camping 21st century style, then you will need to find an RV park and you will need to make campground reservations, because the first come first serve motto that has been around forever is no longer valid. The good news is that mom no longer has to cook meals over an open fire and then boil lake water to do the dishes. Modern camping means everyone can have some fun. After all, what is the point of a camping vacation if you have to work all day?

LP Cylinders and Tanks In RV'S And Motorhomes
LP tanks are boring! Well... they may be BUT since you'll find them on all sorts of rv's including motor homes, fold down campers, truck campers, travel trailers, and 5th wheels it only stands to reason that since we're using them we should also under- stand them. Remember, liquid propane is a gas, it is stored under pressure, it is flammable, and it can be dangerous. First, there are two types of tanks or cylinders.

DOT (Dept. of Transportation)
• used primarily on fold down campers, truck campers, travel trailers,
and 5th wheels.
• can be removed from the recreational vehicle
• usually used in the vertical position, BUT not always. Pre l998 cylinders without OPD devices could be used both ways both this does not apply
today as OPD, devices are required on ALL cylinders.

ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
• manufactured to the code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
• most commonly referred to as "tanks"
• usually found in motor homes
• are mounted permanently

ASME SERVICE VALVE
• marked "vapor withdrawal"
• used only for vapor withdrawal (ASME tanks have a separate fill valve - one with the yellow cap)

TYPES OF SERVICE VALVES
Three types have been available for RV's in recent history
1) Most common was the POL CG 510 (Presto Lite)
-identified by its 5 or 6 prong twist handle and its metal left-handed hose connect
2) OPD service valve with "quick disconnect" which is primarily used by the BBQ industry and is NOT permitted for use on rv's
Quick Disconnect fittings can be used downline on rv's on such things as gas grills but are not permitted at the LP cylinder
3) Type I OPD service valve which is now mandatory (May l, 2002) and has a 1 5/16" ACME thread and is easily distinguished with its black or green connector for the high-pressure hose connection.

"NOTE"
You can run into the "POL style" with
the left handed brass hose connectors with OPD devices. It is easily distinguishable as the open/closing twist handle will NOT have the old style 5 or 6 prongs but will have the new style 3 prong handle which will be clearly labeled OPD. OPD DEVICE (Overfill prevention device)
OPD devices are now required on all recreational vehicles cylinder and tanks are a safety device to insure that cylinders and tanks are not filled above the 80% level.

(OPD devices have been required on ASME tanks since l984 and DOT cylinders since l998)
The device utilizes an internal float connected to the fill valve which engages a piston which in turn restricts the flow of liquid propane into the tank once it reaches the 80% full range.

Obviously
the float devices differ between the horizontal and vertical containers so cylinders and tanks with OPD devices MUST be used in the position (horizontal or vertical) for which they were designed.

FIXED MAXIMUM LIQUID LEVEL GAUGE
The fixed maximum liquid level gauge is another device, which all rv'ers should be familiar with and understand its purpose. The following will help distinguish it from other devices.
• used to determine the 80% level in the container
• part of the service valve on DOT cylinders
• connected to a dip tube which goes into cylinder to the 80% level -on ASME tanks it is physically located at the 80% full level or it is equipped with an internal tube at the 80% level.
• should always be OPEN (turned out) when container is being filled
• during the filling process vapor will be emitted until liquid reaches the 80% level when a "white mist" (liquid propane) will be emitted signifying the container is FULL.

If the container is filled past this level, the excess propane should be "bled off" until only vapor is emitted to insure container is not overfilled in addition, to avert any possible future problems with the container.

For instance, an overfilled container could become dangerous if left in a vehicle or in the sun as temperature increases the pressure inside the tank. Now you have a basic understanding of what you are looking at when you see a LP tank or cylinder and you will know if it is up to date. If you question anything on the tank or cylinder, have it inspected by a professional.

Used Trailers - A Buyers' Guide

What to look for before purchasing a new or used trailer.
Have you ever towed a vehicle or vacationed in a travel trailer? If not consider renting one for a weekend to determine if this is really for you. Give some serious consideration to a pre-owned unit which will be substantially lower in price. You might consider Airstream known for its silver color and unique design, Jayco for its light weight and Dutchman for a reasonable price.

This information can be found in your vehicle information manual. It wouldn't hurt to run this by your mechanic or car dealership as well. Make sure you have the right towing set up, beginning with the bar and hitch, the auxiliary light package, brake controller unit if needed sometimes referred to as a trailer tow package. Safety chains are crucial make sure they are intact. Most trailers are designed to hold two outside propane tanks. Check for the spare tire some units do not include one. If you have a flat tire on the open road you will be in dire need that spare tire. This is not going to the best time to discover that no spare can be found and you missed it at the time of the sale.

You need to determine which size trailer will best meet your needs. Give some thought as to how many people will be traveling with you. This will help determine how many people need sleeping accommodations. A small unit easily sleeps six people. The kitchen area is very important if you plan to prepare most of your meals in the unit while traveling. A microwaves is usually standard in most units, some even include a built in coffee maker.

Storage is also of great importance so make sure the available storage is going go to meet your family's needs. There is usually a lot of storage space under the bed and seating areas inside the unit. You can carry ice chests, bikes, or any item that can be safely tied down and secured.

Most units usually have an antenna and the necessary connections for cable television, phone connections for internet access. Many RV's have satellite connections for both television and satellite so no matter where they are they can do everything on the road they do at home.

RV Living Verses Apartment Living
We kicked out the kids (all over 21), sold our home and purchased an RV. Well live situations change and we didn’t get on the road, at least not yet. We ended up staying in the area and taking full time jobs. But we decided at the time to stay in the RV as full-timers.

The purpose of the article is to offer some insight as to the possibilities of using RV’s instead of apartments and the advantages of Rving. First a little background for those that are not familiar with the Recreational Vehicle (RV) terms. RVs are classified into several different categories.

Class A are the bus like vehicles you see traveling down the road. Class A’s are the cream of the crop so to speak. I have seen some really nice Class A’s and when it comes time for us to upgrade or trade in our current RV we will be looking at the Class A again. However, my tastes start in the $250,000 range, which is a little hard for me to justify.

Next are Class B, these are mini motorhomes. They are built on a light to medium truck chassis and can be identified by the truck cab appearance of the vehicle. In my opinion, these will not be suitable for full time use unless you really like small places. Some newer Class Bs are including what are called slides which are sections of the RV that ‘slide out’ from the body giving you more living space inside. Living space is what you will be looking for in the long run.

After the Class B comes Fifth Wheels. Fifth Wheels are trailers that are pulled by pickup trucks. So to get a fifth wheel you will also need a pickup truck of appropriate size. I would figure at least a ¾ ton pickup. Fifth wheels offer an advantage over Class A and Class B in that once you have the fifth wheel set up on a campsite, the truck is detached and can be used as a means of transportation. With Class A & B RV’s you will need to either tow or bring another vehicle with you to get around. Fifth wheels approach the Class A RV in amenities and in some cases have more space. Dollar for dollar you will get more living space in a fifth wheel than a Class A.

However, you do need an expensive tow vehicle (truck) which has to be considered as part of the purchase. The fifth wheel is also part of a class considered as ‘Towables’. The next ‘towable’ is the travel trailer (TT). These are similar to the fifth wheel except in the connections to the tow vehicle. With TT you connect to a hitch that sits near the bumper of the vehicle. Hence, just about any vehicle has the capabilities of towing a TT depending on size and weight of course. Class A, Fifth Wheels and Travel Trailers are the 3 main RV that you will find people living in on a fulltime basis. After the TT comes the camper class. These are light weight RV really not suitable for full time, however, I have met people that are full-timers in pop-ups, truck campers and even tents. The top of the line for the camper class is probably the truck campers.

These are units that slide into the bed of a pickup truck. In general, the max length is no more than 12 feet from front to back and maybe 10 feet side to side. The last group of towables is the popup or tent trailers. These have a study box frame and as the name implies pop up or lift up to raise the roof over the frame. This class of campers usually have soft sides made of cloth. Even did some camping in the middle of winter with snow on the ground in a popup. Needless to say, a heater was required and it ran all day and all night. As mentioned before, Class A, Fifth wheel and Travel Trailers are the units that most people will find suitable for full-time living.

Our experiences with living full-time in an RV.
Ours is from Jayco and is 38 feet long with 3 slides. One slide is in the bedroom, the other two slides are in the living room one on each side of the trailer. After almost 3 years in the RV as full-timers, we both love it. My wife likes to say it takes less than an hour to clean from front to back, floor to ceiling.

Let’s start with the financial side of living in a RV. You have the cost of the RV. If you buy new, you will take a beating on depreciation. However, like a home, the interest is tax deductible. If you want to buy new, figure a discount of about 25-30% off from the list price. Our unit was a 2003 still on the lot in 2005 with the 2006 units being delivered. The sticker price was over $65,000. We paid $40,000 saving us about 38 percent. Now at the time we did not have a tow vehicle so the dealer delivered the fifth wheel to a near by campground.
Oak Grove in Hatfield, PA is a year round campground. You want to find a campground that offers year round operations. A lot of camp grounds close from November to March or early April. Our only other expense was propane for heating and hot water. Oak Grove supplied 2- 100 lb propane tanks and they automatically changed the tanks for us. This is really nice, kind of like automatic oil delivery when you own a house. Currently propane runs about $50 a bottle. So from the standpoint of renting an apartment to living in an RV expenses are normally cheaper. My daughter pays $750 a month for an apartment near us and we pay on average $425-450.

Other benefits of living in a RV – people! I used to sneak down to DE where my wife (girlfriend at the time) and her family were camping and pitch a tent, then make myself part of the family. It’s funny, but when I traveled and stayed at hotels, you almost felt like a ghost or leopard or something. Heaven forbid if you said ‘hi’ to someone in the elevator or hallway. But when camping, everyone waves as you walk by, some will offer drinks or have you sit by the fire and chat for hours. Speaking of fires, what is it about a campfire? To sit down at night around a nice campfire is so relaxing. Nothing tastes better than food cooked over an open fire. Rving has another benefit, vacations. If you live in an apartment, you vacation consist of going to a destination, finding a hotel/motel, eating out every meal, and taking enough clothes with you for the length of the vacation. When you live in a RV, your home goes with you. 30-40 minutes to pack the RV, disconnect the utilities and hook up to the truck and you are on the road. Meals are not a problem, you have a complete kitchen already stocked just like at home, since it is home. No problem, you normal routine is uninterrupted. Rving is usually cheaper too. When you compare the expenses you will find the RV trip is a lot cheaper than hotel/restaurant trip.

We don’t exactly live in the camping capital of the world and when my family and I decided to purchase a travel trailer, we were in for quite an education. We did what I suspect most people would do, and started scanning the local classifieds, picked up the trader magazines, etc. All to no avail. Everything we looked at locally was either way overpriced or uninhabitable. Luckily, I have an uncle who is basically a camping and RV guru in his own right, so I can’t quite claim that I did this single handedly, but for the most part, it took about two weeks before I clicked on an auction that would forever change our family’s vacation adventures.

We ultimately found our “perfect” trailer, but not after swapping many emails and more photos beyond what was in the listing. But along the way, Ebay did more for us than just match us up with a seller. It matched us up with two wonderful human beings that were just as happy to have found us as buyers as we were to find them as sellers.

After the auction was complete, we arranged a pickup date that was a few weeks away – perfectly fine with the sellers because they wanted to get our new toy ready for us. Little did we know, how far these two people went to make our purchase smooth and enjoyable.

As the two weeks elapsed, the emails turned to camping advice, trials and tribulations and the wishes from the sellers that we would have as many fond camping memories as they did. Knowing that we were complete novices, these two people went so far above and beyond a seller’s obligations, that they could give lessons in good service after the sale. It was a 7 hour drive, so we also made arrangement to stay at a local hotel – which our new friends recommended based upon the ease of parking our new trailer there overnight for the first time. And until that point, being car travelers, the size of a parking lot was certainly never a concern when we booked our hotels.

One of those rare times that the photos didn’t even do it justice. And the hospitality the sellers extended was awesome. They even had dinner waiting for us! So after our long trip and a very tasty dinner, we were taken through all the basics of hookup, awning setup, electronics, maintenance, upkeep and more! So as we swap campfire stories from campground to campground, we will always have such fond memories of our largest Ebay purchase yet.

Family Camping Trip Finds New Pleasures

Camping is an activity that I spent most of my forty plus years believing I had no interest in and absolutely no use for. After the passing of my dear mother, it was her wish that my family and I did something that would enhance our togetherness in her memory. Nothing seemed just right, and the few ideas I had just didn’t seem “lasting” enough.

Then, one day I stopped into a local grocery store that I seldom use, but it was convenient at the time so I rushed in through the front door, with only my urgent grocery needs in mind. As I was passing their bulletin board with local ads, business cards and such, a flyer jumped out at me with the following words in big, bold lettering:
Family Camping is Just What You Need!
Well, I certainly didn’t think my family “needed” camping, but for some reason that headline compelled me to take a closer look. Below the headline, there was a photo of a motor home for sale and the flyer went on to say that the seller’s wife had just passed away and he no longer could maintain the motor home by himself and was forced to sell. He said the motor home would be perfect for a family looking to enjoy the togetherness that camping afforded, and for which he and his wife had so many fond memories.

My husband and I found ourselves backing our new travel trailer into our driveway excitedly for the first time, with no idea of the joy this box on wheels was about to bring to our lives. We didn’t end up purchasing the motor home shown on the flyer, but we did go look at it and got quite a camping education from the seller. And it was that visit which put the notion into our heads that perhaps camping would be a wonderful experience for us and our two daughters and the lasting memories would be a fitting tribute to my own mother as well.

Because we got our trailer late in the season, we only managed to squeeze in three camping trips before the winter weather set in. I had never relaxed on a vacation so much and enjoyed nature and the outdoors to the extent that our new hobby permitted. And our children played, explored and had experiences that will remain with them for life. My husband, well, let’s just say he’s already looking at our next trailer and he will gladly take any proud camper up on the offer to “look inside,” and show him around their “perfect,” model.
